A New Chapter for the Heart of Durham

Since 1996, the Downtown Durham YMCA has played a vital role in the Bull City’s revitalization, bringing people together and helping lead the return to the city’s center. Today, as Durham continues to grow, so does our commitment to serve.

The current facility on Morgan Street has served us well, but it’s time for a transformation. With aging infrastructure and limited space, we’re building a new YMCA to meet the evolving needs of our vibrant community.

Growing With Durham

The YMCA of the Triangle has acquired a .79-acre site at the corner of Blackwell and W. Pettigrew Streets to build a state-of-the-art Downtown Durham YMCA. This new facility will be a dynamic hub for health, wellness and connection.

Here’s what’s ahead: 

• Construction is expected to begin in fall 2027, with doors opening in early 2029. 
• The new Y will feature rooftop terraces for outdoor fitness, an  indoor pool, basketball court,  indoor track,  group fitness studios and dedicated spaces for youth and family programs. 
• The current Downtown Durham YMCA is expected to remain open during construction. 
• And of course, Downtown Durham members will continue to enjoy access to all Durham and YMCA of the Triangle locations. 

More Than a Building

The Downtown Durham YMCA is more than a place. It’s where families, adults and children come together to grow stronger in spirit, mind and body. Some call it Durham’s living room. Others, their second home. All agree: the Y is at the heart—and in the heart—of Durham.

For over 168 years, the YMCA of the Triangle has evolved to meet the needs of the region. This new facility is a bold step forward to ensure everyone in Durham has access to the resources they need to thrive.

This community needs and deserves a new Y. And together, we will build it.
