Youth & Government: Legislator

Legislator- Representatives & Senators

The role of a Legislator within NC YMCA Youth & Government program is to create laws that you think are important and will benefit the citizens of North Carolina. As such, you will be given opportunities to speak up and engage with your peers from around the state. With that in mind, there are some clear steps to becoming a proficient Legislator as a NC YMCA Youth Legislator.

Step 1: Brainstorm topics and choose the one that best meets the criteria.
Step 2: Research your topic, and write a first draft.
Step 3: Get feedback on your first draft. Many people make the mistake of thinking their way is the best. It never hurts to get a second opinion.
Step 4: Submit the final draft online.
Step 5: Learn Parliamentary Procedure. This is going to be important for the conference. If you are familiar with it, then the conference will move smoothly and you will make an impact.
Step 6: Practice debating bills using Parliamentary Procedure. Not only will this make your Parli Pro skills stronger, but it will also help you firm up your public speaking and debate techniques.
Step 7: Find out your bill ranking.
Step 8: Start debating your bill at your local delegation meetings to prepare for Conference. Prepare an opening statement, concise talking points, and a closing statement.
Step 9: Attend the Pre-Conference.
Step 10: Attend the NC YMCA Youth Legislature.
