Healthy Weight and Your Child is a weight-management program that focuses on healthy eating, physical activity and behavior change to empower children and families to live healthier and more active lifestyles.
Evidence demonstrates that child weight-management programs are more effective when the whole family is involved and committed to adopting healthier habits.
Families registered for this program will work with trained leaders. During this time, children and an adult caregiver will learn about topics, including:
- Healthy eating
- Physical activity
- Portion control
- Internal and external triggers
- Food label reading
- Goal setting and rewards
Sessions and Locations
Healthy Weight and Your Child is a 15-week program that meets twice a week for ten weeks and once a week for five weeks. Each session is two hours.
Every class focuses on nutrition education and opportunities for family-based physical activity.
Alexander Family YMCA
Sept. 10 - Dec. 17, Tuesday/ Thursday, 6 - 8 p.m.
After 10 weeks, the class will only meet on Thursdays.
A.E. Finley YMCA
Sept. 19 - Dec. 26, Thursdays, 6 - 8 p.m. and Sundays 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
After 10 weeks, the class will only meet on Thursdays
Northwest Cary YMCA
Sept 18 - Dec. 25, Wednesdays, 6 - 8 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. - noon
After 10 weeks, the class will only meet on Wednesdays
Children must be between the ages of 7 - 13 and have a body mass index of the 95th percentile or higher.
An adult caregiver must attend each session with their participating child.
Healthy Weight and Your Child is an evidence-based program offered through a YMCA Medical Membership. A YMCA Medical Membership is for anyone who needs access to quality, evidence-based programs, health coaching and workout facilities.
