Diversability Swim Lessons

Diversability Swim Lessons is a small program currently available only at the  A.E. Finley, Poole Family and Northwest Cary YMCAs.

The swim lesson program is designed to teach individuals of all ages with special needs how to swim and gain comfort in the water. At the Y, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.

The Y model is to encourage aquatic participation at an early age. We focus on functional ability, achieving small goals, physical and emotional well-being, and the individual. Our goal is to improve swimming skills, build confidence in the water and teach personal safety in a way that will promote confidence, fun and overall well-being. Our lessons are geared toward people with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special needs.

Each 30-minute private lesson allows for individual attention, visual cues and frequent reinforcement of skills. A total of four lessons are provided for one week. Lessons are held during the summer, mornings and evenings, Monday - Thursday.
