Andy Martin’s Y story began in middle school where he discovered his love for swimming at the Hull Street YMCA in Richmond, Virginia. Though life took him away from the Y for a time, the seeds of connection and community were planted.
In 2004, Andy walked back through the doors of the Kerr Family YMCA, not as a competitive swimmer, but as a father seeking health, balance and belonging. Overweight and out of shape, with a toddler in tow and another child on the way, Andy found peace and strength in the water. What started as a personal wellness journey quickly evolved into something deeper.
A Renewed Sense of Purpose
Through volunteering as a swim coach and an Annual Campaigner, Andy built relationships and rediscovered the power of community. In 2009, he made the bold decision to leave the banking industry and dedicate himself fully to the mission of the Y. Since then, he's led in a variety of roles including senior director of membership, aquatics and wellness at the Kerr Family YMCA.
Most recently, Andy served as the Associate Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis for the YMCA of the Triangle.
Building Community
On September 15, Andy started the next chapter of his Y story as the Branch Executive of the Alexander Family and Poyner YMCAs.
“I’m excited to be with people again in a different way,” Andy shares. “To connect, engage, develop—and most of all—serve.”
Andy and Susan, his wife of 28 years, have two sons—one attending UNC Charlotte and the other at Campbell University. Andy and Susan share their home with two dogs, a cat and plenty of laughter.
