September Fostering Connections

At the Y, feedback isn’t just something we receive, it’s something we actively seek. Every comment, suggestion and story shared by our members and program participants helps shape the way we serve our community. Whether it’s praise or constructive criticism, we treat feedback as a gift. It’s not always easy to hear where we’ve missed the mark, but it’s always valuable. And when we hear that we’ve made a difference? That’s fuel for our mission.

Recently, I received an email from a parent whose children attended Camp Expedition at the Northwest Cary YMCA. Her message was full of gratitude and joy. She described how her kids lit up during camp week, how they came home buzzing with stories from field trips and traditional Y activities, and how deeply they connected with their camp director.

She wrote, “I think it's a true sign of success when a sick 5-year-old (we're talking fever, lethargic, no appetite) insists he's fine, because he wants to go to camp. (For the record, we did make him stay home that day!)”

That kind of passion from a child speaks volumes about the environment our team creates.

This past summer, more than 14,700 children walked through our doors for a day camp experience. Some came for half days, others for full days and a few participated in academic enrichment alongside play. Across the region, the Y ran upwards of 100 camps in 2025, each designed to spark curiosity, build friendships and foster resilience.

We don’t just hope kids have fun. We work strategically to ensure that every child leaves with skills that help them thrive. Whether it’s learning to swim, navigating social dynamics or discovering a new interest, we want every moment at camp to be a building block for lifelong confidence and character.

And that’s where feedback becomes essential. It helps us understand what’s working and where we can grow. It reminds us that behind every number is a story, and behind every story is a family trusting us with their child’s summer. Feedback helps us stay accountable to our Mission and responsive to our community’s needs.

Kudos to our youth team for pouring themselves into this summer. Their work in 2025 will have lifelong effects on families and on our community. And we’re already listening, learning and planning for what’s next.
