Celebrating National Summer Learning Week

How the YMCA Helps Students Thrive All Summer Long

Each year, National Summer Learning Week shines a spotlight on the importance of keeping young minds engaged when school is out. Held annually in July, this nationwide recognition raises awareness about the critical role summer programs play in closing learning gaps, supporting working families and helping students enter the next school year ready to succeed. Research shows that without meaningful summer learning opportunities, many students can lose months of academic progress, especially in literacy and math.

At the YMCA, we believe every child deserves the chance to learn, grow and thrive all year long. That’s why we invest in programs designed to strengthen academic skills, foster confidence and support families throughout the summer months. These programs are available at no cost to families and are fully supported through partnerships, grants and the YMCA Annual Campaign.

Power Scholars

Power Scholars is a five-week summer learning program that combines rigorous academic instruction with enrichment activities to help elementary students catch up and stay on track. Offered in partnership with Wake County Public Schools and Chatham County Schools, students are recommended for Power Scholars by their schools based on academic need.

Each morning, certified teachers lead small-group instruction focused on math and literacy — the core skills most vulnerable to summer learning loss. Afternoons are filled with enrichment activities like STEM, art, music and physical education, plus field trips that connect learning to the world beyond the classroom.

The impact is clear: by the end of the program, our Power Scholars students gain an average of 1.5 months in math skills and two months in literacy skills, giving them a stronger start for the school year ahead. Just as important, they build confidence, develop friendships and discover a love of learning in a supportive environment.

Camp Excel

Camp Excel is an eight-week, free or low-cost summer day camp serving students in grades K – 8 who live in under-resourced communities. Each day, campers receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch, take part in fun, enriching YMCA camp activities and build critical life skills.

In addition to classic camp fun — sports, creative arts, STEM and more — campers participate in at least an hour of daily literacy instruction led by certified teachers. They also take receive swim lessons, helping them gain essential water safety skills. Camp Excel blends academic support, personal growth and healthy activities to give students a safe, supportive space all summer long.

Why Summer Learning Matters

When students have access to high-quality summer learning programs, they’re better equipped to succeed in school and beyond. At the YMCA, we’re proud to work alongside community partners, educators and families to make these opportunities possible.

National Summer Learning Week is a chance to celebrate this impact — and to reaffirm our commitment to helping every student reach their full potential, summer after summer.
