We are proud to share that the YMCA of the Triangle has been honored with the U.S. Energy Project of the Year award by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). This recognition celebrates our groundbreaking approach to sustainability through the implementation of a Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contracting (GESPC) model, a first for any YMCA association in the United States.
This innovative model enabled our Y to reallocate existing utility and maintenance budgets to fund a wide range of energy efficiency upgrades. By doing so, we not only reduced our environmental footprint but also addressed long-standing deferred maintenance and capital improvement needs without requiring new funding sources.
A Year of Impactful Results
In the first full year since the project’s completion, the YMCA of the Triangle achieved $643,239 in energy savings—an impressive 22% more than originally projected. These savings are being used to pay down the substantial investment made in the energy conservation project through the performance contract model. In addition, a portion of the savings is being reinvested into operational initiatives that directly benefit our members and the broader community.
Looking ahead, the energy conservation measures (ECMs) implemented across our facilities are projected to generate more than $9 million in energy savings over the next 15 years.
Key Energy Conservation Measures
The project included a comprehensive suite of ECMs designed to maximize efficiency and sustainability:
- Lighting & lighting controls
- Building automation system (BAS) upgrades and HVAC retro-commissioning
- Water efficiency improvements
- On-site chlorine generation for pool chemical treatment
- Variable frequency drives (VFDs) for pool pumps
- High-performance boilers and domestic hot water systems
- HVAC equipment replacements
- Building envelope upgrades
- Exploration of renewable and smart technologies (e.g., solar panels, vendor misers)
A Commitment to Social Responsibility
This project is more than just an energy initiative—it’s a reflection of our commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. By significantly reducing our energy usage, we are creating a healthier, more sustainable future for our community. The savings generated allow us to invest more in what truly matters: programs and people.
Our Property & Facilities (P&F) team continues to actively monitor and fine-tune the implemented energy conservation measures to ensure optimal performance. Over the next five years, they will guide ongoing adjustments, support staff training and track progress toward our long-term sustainability goals to ensure the YMCA remains a leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
Celebrating Excellence
The YMCA of the Triangle will be formally recognized at the 2025 AEE International Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Sept. 17, during the AEE World Energy Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. These awards honor outstanding contributions to the field of energy and celebrate those who are leading the way in innovation and excellence.
