Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know that about 38% of Americans are pre-diabetic, including over 300,000 people in our region? Even more startling, the CDC reports that 80% of adults with prediabetes don’t know it. Prediabetes often has no symptoms, yet it increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The good news: small lifestyle changes can make a big difference—and the YMCA is here to help.

Through the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), participants gain the knowledge, tools and community support they need to make lasting lifestyle changes. The program focuses on healthy eating, increased physical activity and gradual weight loss, all proven to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

And it works. At the Y, 80% of participants who complete the yearlong program are no longer considered pre-diabetic after significantly lowering their clinical markers, such as A1C and fasting glucose levels. Since 2019, our Y has helped more than 1,000 individuals potentially prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. On average, participants have lost 6.5% of their body weight and increased their activity to 183 minutes per week.

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program runs for 12 months and includes 26 sessions—weekly, hour-long group meetings followed by monthly sessions led by a trained Lifestyle Coach. These small-group settings create a supportive environment where participants share challenges, celebrate successes and learn practical strategies for healthy living.

Throughout the program, participants explore how nutrition, physical activity and behavior changes can make a meaningful difference in their health. The monthly maintenance sessions help them stay motivated and continue making progress toward their goals.

To qualify for the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, participants must be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Overweight (BMI > 25; Asian adults, BMI > 22)
  • At high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or diagnosed with prediabetes

The YMCA DPP is part of a nationwide effort, grounded in research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to help people take charge of their health and change their future.

This Diabetes Awareness Month, take the first step toward a healthier you. Talk with your doctor, learn your risk and see how the Y can support you in living a healthier life.

Because prevention works, and every small step adds up to lasting change.
