International Trip Around the Triangle: Awaze Cuisine

You are invited join the International Trip Around the Triangle Group. We will explore local international restaurants as they transport us to different countries through delicious cuisines.

Participants will visit and support local international restaurants, meet the owners, learn about the country and culture. Get to know others as we “break bread” together.

This group meets the last Wednesday of the month from 6 - 8 p.m.

On May 28 we will visit Awaze Cuisine featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean food. The restaurant is located at 904 NE Maynard Rd, Cary. The owner, Azeb Mekonnen, and his wife, both originally from Ethiopia, will talk about Ethiopian culture, the food preparation and share a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony with you. Sign up in advance. The meal is self-pay.

The very first thing you need to know about Ethiopian food is something called "injera". Injera is the staple and the most widely consumed starch/filler in all of Ethiopian cuisine. Most Ethiopians eat it injera, twice, or even three times a day. It’s the foundation of Ethiopian food and is the base behind most meals. Not only is Injera used to pick up your food, but it’s also used to accompany stews and other dishes. Much like a sourdough flatbread, Injera is made with teff flour, an Ethiopian grain, and is fermented for three days before being fried on a griddle.

The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is one of the most important social customs in Ethiopia. Each household may participate in coffee ceremony as much as three times a day and offers an opportunity to be hospitable and welcoming to family, neighbors and friends.

The International Trip Around the Triangle group is for YMCA members-only. Please sign up in advance. The meal is self-pay.
