Youth & Government: The Conference Lunch Playbook

By Hannah Sutherby

It’s been hours of sitting behind your placard, listening diligently to bills, cases, and endless discussions. Suddenly, you hear it – your stomach rumbles. It’s officially time for lunch. Miraculously, someone in the room calls for a lunch break. It’s go time! You immediately start thinking, What do I do for lunch? You're limited on time and money and somewhere that is quick and efficient. The panic sets in: How do I do a perfect YAG lunch run?! Do not fear! Here is the how-to guide of the infamous YAG lunch run.

There are four key tips for perfecting the lunch run.

Tip #1: Pick somewhere close.
Being in downtown Raleigh can be exciting, and exploring the area is tempting, but it’s important to choose restaurants that are, at most, a five-minute walk from the Raleigh Convention Center. Some good options include Jimmy John's on Fayetteville Street, McDonald’s on South Wilmington Street, and Complex Brew conveniently located inside the RCC.

Tip #2: Order ahead.
Time is limited, so ordering online before you leave can save you precious minutes during your break.

Tip #3: Go with a buddy.
As YAGers take over the streets of downtown Raleigh, it’s important to stick with a friend while grabbing lunch to stay safe and keep track of your time.

Tip #4: Check the time frequently.
You do not want to be the person walking in late to your room with a bag of Chick-Fil-A.

As we near conference, we know how stressful it can be to navigate your schedule at YAG. The one thing that should be stress-free is eating – so be smart and be fed!
