Youth and Government 2026: A "Yager's" Guide to Packing

A “YAGers” Guide to Packing

By Hannah Sutherby

As the days until conference quickly dwindle, “YAGers” are all working hard to prepare for what is sure to be the best conference yet. Whether it’s getting our bills approved or researching budgets to ensure our bills are fiscally responsible, we are all presented with tasks. However, one responsibility looms over everyone: the infamous packing day.

The YAG packing list may seem daunting at first, but understanding the dress code along with a few helpful tips can make preparing much easier and help ensure the best possible conference experience.

YAG attire is best described as a mix of business casual and business formal. Many delegates opt for collared shirts, dress pants, and jackets, while others choose blouses, dresses, or slacks. Blazers are also a popular choice for adding a more polished, professional touch to any outfit. Delegates are encouraged to avoid clothing that is excessively tight or overly loose to ensure attire remains appropriate throughout the conference.

It is also important to remember that while “office siren” inspiration from TikTok or Pinterest may be tempting, conference outfits should remain modest. It is best to avoid low-cut necklines, cropped shirts, and short skirts or dresses. Additionally, February in Raleigh can be cold, so dressing with the weather in mind is essential!

While our daytime professional attire is important, many “YAGers” know the most important outfits are seen on Friday Fun Night and on Saturday night’s Governors Gala. Be sure to dress according to each night’s theme, which can be found on the NC Youth and Government Instagram page. Gala attire should be semi-formal while still adhering to the YAG dress code. Delegates are encouraged to choose appropriate garment lengths that represent your delegation well!

We can’t wait to see everyone and their stunning YAG fits in just a few weeks!
