Impacting health outcomes for YMCA members and the community
The Southeast Raleigh YMCA launched its first round of focus groups aimed at improving health outcomes for its members and the wider community. We currently have 35 participants segmented into four focus groups. Areas of focus include group fitness class attendees, wellness floor users, diabetes prevention program participants and our local THRIVE group for active older adults. The focus groups are ongoing and will last between 10 - 12 weeks, ending in early September.
Our goal is to help improve health outcomes and garner feedback on current member experiences within the Y. This initiative is part of the Southeast Raleigh Y's ongoing commitment to health and community well-being. The groups met to discuss various aspects of health, wellness and community engagement, aiming to develop strategies to enhance the well-being of all members.
What we’ve learned so far:
Community Engagement & Participation
Participants shared that being part of a strong community made them feel like they belonged. Many participants shared that they have grown socially and built strong bonds with others through their involvement with the Y.
“I’ve seen physical and social impacts and now have that element of community. I look forward to seeing the same people and have opportunities to hang out outside of the gym.” - Group Fitness Participant
“The Southeast Raleigh YMCA offers a good social life. The new connections I'm able to make have been great. The Y is so welcoming." - Y Member
- The group fitness focus found that 44% of participants attend more than three classes per week and 56% attend 2 - 3 classes per week.
- The wellness floor group found that 9.22 of 10 would recommend a friend or colleague to the Y. Participants expressed their willingness to recommend the Southeast Raleigh Y to their family and friends.
- 100% of THRIVE participants would recommend joining the group.
Physical Changes
Participants noted significant weight loss and progress in diabetes prevention due to the resources provided by the Y.
“I reduced my A1C significantly - The doctor took me off the meds.” - Diabetes Prevention Program Group Member
"I lost 10 pounds, and I think I am building strength. My A1C is lower." - Group Fitness Participant
"I’ve lost 18 pounds. Working out helps me to relax." - Wellness Floor User
Looking Forward
The Y encourages accountability and ongoing support to members with a challenge to commit to exercising at least twice a week and to check in weekly to report their exercise routines.
This focus group launch at Southeast Raleigh YMCA marks another step towards improving health outcomes for Y members and the surrounding community. With 35 dedicated participants contributing valuable insights, our Y is well-positioned to implement impactful health initiatives that will benefit everyone. By staying committed to these goals, we hope to continue fostering positive health results and a connected community for years to come.
