Ingram Staff Spotlight: Darlene Smith

The fabulous Darlene is the latest member of our team to celebrate TEN years of service to our community through the Y! We're so glad that she recognized how good she would look in the blue shirt and has been with us through the transition to our current facility.

Darlene adds a warmth to our branch that is a large part of why it can feel like home for so many of us. We asked her to share her "Why the Y?" story with us.

"My adventures with the Y started first as a member. I joined with my husband shortly after the facility opened in Lee County.

"In 2012, I made the decision to leave the teaching field to spend more time with my son before he went off to college. I happened to be in the gym one day and thought, 'This could be a great place to work,' as it was something different and part time.

"On my way out, I asked the staff member at the desk, Jamie, about a job and have now been doing this for 10 years. (Jamie and I laugh because I was her first hire.)

"There have been opportunities for me to work in different positions or programs, but I really enjoy working on our Welcome Center, as I see everyone and can share stories, listen to our members share their ups and downs, and most of all, I hope I can be that smile or lift up for their day!

"And, yes, I do enjoy a good workout!"
