Feeding the Need

Many families in our community lack access to fresh foods. More than 30 million children in underserved communities receive free or reduced-cost meals during the school year, but only 2.3 million have access to free meals during the summer.

Last summer The Produce Box stepped up to the plate to help meet that need here in our community by providing boxes of fresh food to campers attending YMCA Camp High Hopes - the Y's subsidized day camp for children who live in underserved areas with little access to fresh, healthy, affordable food.

Camp High Hopes provides two hot meals to campers five days a week, but with The Produce Box’s contributions, campers are able to share fresh food with their families.

“Through partnerships like this, we are able to help campers and their families see the value of solid nutrition and fresh foods,” said Susan Pettengill, VP of Healthy Living at the YMCA. “This is what we’re all about at the Y – helping the kids and families we serve grow and live healthier lives.”
