Feeding the Need

Summer is almost here. That means a bountiful harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables. But for many in our community access to fresh foods is limited. More than 30 million children in underserved communities receive free or reduced-cost meals during the school year, but only 2.3 million have access to free meals during the summer.

The Produce Box is stepping up to the plate to help meet that need here in our community by providing boxes of fresh food to campers attending YMCA Camp High Hopes - the Y's subsidized day camp for children who live in underserved areas with little access to fresh, healthy, affordable food.

Camp High Hopes provides two hot meals to campers five days a week, but with The Produce Box’s contributions, campers are able to share fresh food with their families.

“Through partnerships like this, we are able to help campers and their families see the value of solid nutrition and fresh foods,” said Susan Pettengill, VP of Healthy Living at the YMCA. “This is what we’re all about at the Y – helping the kids and families we serve grow and live healthier lives.”
