National Cancer Survivor Month at the YMCA

June is National Cancer Survivor Month, a time to honor the strength, courage and resilience of those who have faced cancer. Today, more than 16.9 million cancer survivors live in the United States, each with a story that reflects determination, perseverance and hope.

Survivorship is not just about living after a cancer diagnosis. It’s about navigating the emotional, physical and social challenges that come with treatment and recovery. Whether newly diagnosed, in remission or living with cancer as a chronic illness, survivors show us what it means to thrive despite adversity.

Our YMCA celebrates and supports survivors in their recovery journeys this month and every month. One of the ways we do this is through LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a nationally recognized, evidence-based health and wellness program designed specifically for adult cancer survivors.

Since 2019, 600 local adults have found strength, support, and community through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

"[At LIVESTRONG], I felt accepted, understood and hopeful for the first time since my cancer journey. Staff, volunteers and members are all very gracious, loving and helpful."  - LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant

Our next session of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA kicks off this week  - June 2, 2025 - and we are looking forward to welcoming a cohort of survivors ready to regain strength, build community, and take meaningful steps toward recovery.

This 12-week program offers survivors the opportunity to participate in small group sessions led by certified YMCA instructors, who are trained in post-rehab exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. Participants meet twice a week for 75 minutes, engaging in personalized physical activity focused on:

  • Building muscle mass and strength
  • Increasing flexibility and endurance
  • Boosting energy levels and self-esteem

More than just a fitness program, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the whole person. Participants benefit not only from the physical improvements but also from the camaraderie and emotional support of connecting with others who understand what it's like to live through and beyond cancer.

Thanks to generous contributions to the YMCA Annual Campaign, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is offered at no cost to participants. Space is limited, and we do our best to enroll individuals in the first available session.
