Creating Access, Changing Lives

Help us celebrate Doug and Jo Anna McMillan's impact upon thousands of lives in the Triangle. This year, Doug retires after 50 years of service to the YMCA – 29 years as YMCA of the Triangle CEO. Doug's late wife, Jo Anna, was an important leader at Camp Seafarer and at YMCAs in Raleigh. As was Jo Anna, Doug is a huge believer in the power of overnight camping for children and their families. He has seen camp transform children through independence, confidence and the development of leadership skills. The Doug and Jo Anna McMillan Family Endowment was founded by Doug in Jo Anna’s honor and is now being expanded to include his name. It helps make the YMCA of the Triangle overnight camps (Sea Gull, Seafarer and Kanata) accessible to children and families who otherwise might not have the ability to share in the magic of camp.

Furthering the McMillans' Legacy

Doug McMillan, a Raleigh native, began working for YMCA Camp Seafarer in high school. McMillan graduated from Wake Forest University in 1973. In 1980, he started working full-time for the YMCA of the Triangle, primarily in youth programming. He became YMCA of the Triangle CEO in 1993. Under Doug’s leadership, the Y experienced significant growth, developed strategic partnerships, forged collaborations and expanded service across the region.

  • Today, the YMCA of the Triangle operates in seven counties serving more than 200,000 children, families, and adults at 17 facility branches, three program centers, multiple program sites, and three overnight camps.
  • During his tenure, the YMCA has grown to be among one of the largest YMCAs in the country. The YMCA of the Triangle Annual Campaign, which launched in 1993, has grown to more than $10 million and is the largest YMCA annual campaign in the nation.
  • YMCA of the Triangle merged with the YMCA of Greater Durham in 2002 and merged with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA in 2014. Both mergers united and strengthened the Triangle in support of Y programming focused on healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.
  • Doug and his late wife, Jo Anna Lilley McMillan, have five adult children and three grandchildren.
