Collin Davis: Overcoming Obstacles to Success

Like a lot of swimmers, Collin Davis joined the YOTA swim team at a young age. He joined the Downtown Durham Y team at the age of 11 and has been swimming with the team ever since.

But what makes Collin different from other swimmers on the team is that he’s deaf. Collin is aided by cochlear implants, but in the water, he doesn’t use them, so he can’t hear. However, he hasn’t let this challenge slow him down in his pursuit of success.

His commitment has paid off. In August, Collin joined 13 other elite deaf swimmers representing the US in the World Deaf Swimming Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Taking part in nine individual events and six relays in this his first-ever international meet, he was a 6-time finalist.

Collin set personal best times in all of his individual events and broke the USA Deaf record for the 800 Free with a time of 8:52.04. We are proud of Collin’s accomplishments and we are excited that he has taken his place among a distinguished list of YOTA athletes that have represented the US on an international stage!
