The Y Welcomes All
After twenty hours of travel from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, David Ew and his wife Grace arrived in the United States and joined their son for Thanksgiving dinner. David, a retired System Professional with Wella, and Grace had made this arduous journey many times before to visit their son, his wife, and his two children. On this trip, however, David and Grace arrived as immigrants ready to make their new life in America. Like many immigrants, the Ew’s chose to leave their home country to be near family. Now David is able to enjoy being a part of his grandsons’ daily life.
When asked what he enjoys about America David replies, “The people. Also, there’s less traffic.” David uses a scooter to help him get from place to place and adds, “America is handicap friendly. It is safe and easy to move around.”
An active member in his church, David spends most mornings at the Taylor Family Y where he swims, uses the weights and enjoys fellowship with members and staff. David has constant nerve pain in both legs as a result of falling off a bicycle twenty-six years ago, “but when I come to the Y, I don’t feel it as much. Everyone is so friendly.”
David channeled his passion and enthusiasm for the Y and his new life in America into being a part of a team to organize Welcoming Week events at the Taylor Family Y. He will co-MC a games event as part of Family Fit Night on September 14th, and contribute a delicious dish of Malaysian sticky rice with a yucca dessert to the International Potluck on September 18th.
From September 14 - 23, the YMCA of the Triangle will join communities across the nation to celebrate Welcoming Week, a national event that honors what makes us all unique and promotes the benefits of welcoming everyone.
The schedule of events David helped plan at the Taylor Y include:
Family Fit Welcoming Party
Fri., Sept. 14, 5:30 - 7 p.m.
Choose from Zumba©, yoga or family games. When class is over join us for pizza, name that landmark, and more!
Tues., Sept. 18 11:00 – 12:30pm
Celebrate our diversity and gather for food and fellowship. Enjoy a taste of flavors from around the world while listening to stories from members (including David!) about their immigrant experiences.
