Darkness to Light D2L

The YMCA of the Triangle is committed to protecting children, and proudly partners with Darkness to Light (D2L), a non-profit that empowers adults to help prevent child sexual abuse.

Through the D2L Stewards of Children training, adults learn tools to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.

Five Days of Action

Join us Oct. 26 - 30 for Five Days of Action, a campaign designed to raise awareness and inspire all adults to take action to protect children from sexual abuse.

The world looks a little different right now. Our Five Days of Action plan and resources encourage parents and caregivers to take it One Day at a Time. Check out our tools and tips for proactively protecting and being aware of risks. There's a tip for each day.

Day 1 - Get Started
Start with having a conversation with kids. Play the "What If?" game to begin. Role-play various scenarios.

Day 2 - Internet Safety
Internet safety is more important now. Connect with your kids before, during and after online use. Discuss how new scenarios could affect your rules around the internet, apps and devices. Review internet safety tips periodically with your children.

Day 3 - Activities
Remember the three main principles for minimizing the opportunity for abuse - preventing isolation, keeping situations interruptible and setting expectations. Check out a sample daily calendar you can adapt for your family.

Day 4 - Being a Safe Adult
Help your kids recognize safe behavior and safe adults. Keep communication lines open, which can be hard during stressful times. Make sure your kids know they can come to you at any time.

Day 5 - Bring it Home
Create a Family Code of Conduct. Think of this as rules your family lives by with respect to bodies and boundaries. It can help kids understand what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior, help them make informed decisions and ultimately avoid dangerous situations.

The YMCA offers Stewards of Children training throughout the year to groups, organizations and area nonprofits. These trainings help adults recognize the signs of potential child sexual abuse. Stewards of Children is an interactive workshop that provides adults with five steps to help protect children. The evidence-informed class offers simple ways to minimize opportunities for abuse in our community, equipping parents, youth-serving organizations and concerned individuals to make a difference in the lives of children.

One in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. The Y’s goal is to shed a light on this issue and increase understanding that it can be prevented, stopped and overcome.

The YMCA waives the fee for the Stewards of Children materials and training in the community. Trainings are available to any group of adults who are interested in child sexual abuse prevention. We are glad to help youth-serving organizations, daycares, faith-based organizations, government agencies, non-profit organizations, community and parent groups. There is a $10 fee for the online training classes.
