Chapel Hill Y Specialty Camp

Do you have a camper with more specific interests in mind? Looking for ways to engage your child in new and different past times? Our Specialty Camp fits the bill.

These special weeks combine the best of traditional day camps and time spent focusing on new and different activities. Days are split between camp activities, and the chosen focus of the week. See themes below. Specialty Camp is open to campers in rising grades 1 – 6. Specialty Camp operated through the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA.

OUR STAFF

YMCA summer day camp staff are ages 16 through early college. Many were campers themselves. Each YMCA camp counselor is hand-picked for their enthusiasm, energy, eye for safety and maturity. All counselors go through 30 hours of hands-on training in everything from managing a group of energetic kids to basic first aid.

One of the keys to ensuring your child has a great camp experience is to come prepared for a fun camp day. A little planning can help your child's summer camp experience begin with a smooth start and ensure that he/she has an experience to remember! Be sure your child gets a good night's sleep and starts their day with a healthy breakfast.

What to bring to camp each day

  • Backpack
  • Sunscreen (please apply it before you arrive)
  • Water Bottle
  • Sneakers or sandals with a heel strap
  • Bathing suit and towel
  • Nutritious Bag Lunch (non-perishable)
  • A healthy snack

What to leave at home

  • Electronics, games, phones or music players
  • Candy
  • Personal sports equipment

SWIMMING

Children take a swim assessment on their first day of swimming at camp. The swim evaluation is designed to gauge a child's swimming skills and comfort level.

Once assessed, swimmers wear a swim band indicating where they are allowed in the pool. If a child is assessed as a non-swimmer, the Y will provide a Coast Guard approved life jacket.
