George Hoffman, 83, of Cary, joined the Kraft Family YMCA when the facility opened back in April of 2008. George was new to the area after purchasing a home in Cary and was looking for a way to get to know other local people in the community.

After recovering from previous surgeries that he had in 2007, George was looking for a way to stay in shape and help speed along his recovery. His answer was found when he came to the YMCA and received a tour.

Staff showed him all of the workout equipment that the facility had to offer. They showed him a variety of different machines, how to use them and how they were beneficial to him and his health. He did this all while meeting new people, both staff and members at the Y, and getting to know them by name and forming close relationships.

After joining, George began to workout three days per week and says that the Y helped him improve his health in a multitude of ways.

“I lost my gut,” says George, referring to where he lost a majority of his weight. “Not only did the Y help me lose my weight, but I also got rid of the arthritis in my right shoulder.”

When asked why he loves coming to the Y, George had many reasons but concluded by saying, “It’s kind of like the TV show Cheers… you walk in and everybody knows your name. This place is great, and very convenient. This place… well, it feels like a community.”
