Volunteer Spotlight: Sue Bridgeman

Monday, January 28, 2019

The Kerr Family YMCA relies upon a number of dedicated volunteers who help us every day to carry out the mission of the Y: putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

We recently caught up with Sue Bridgeman, a retired high school math teacher who now spends her Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Kerr YMCA, working with students who need a little extra support in their math classes. We're so grateful for Ms. Sue and all she is doing to help strengthen the foundations of our community.

We asked Ms. Sue to try her hand at writing a "guest blog post" for us. Join us in getting to know Ms. Sue a bit better and learn more about what inspires her to give back to the YMCA community.

ms. sue - In her own words

My name is Susan Bridgeman. I am a retired math teacher. I taught for over 40 years; grades 7 through freshman college level. I knew that I wanted to teach when I was in 5th grade and by 8th grade I knew I wanted to be a math teacher.

When I am not volunteering, I love to work in my garden and I love to play and learn new solitaire card games. I also enjoy reading. My two favorite books are, “The Phantom Tollbooth” and “The Dot and The Line” both by Norton Juster.

I tutor math to high school students two days a week at the Kerr Family YMCA.  I have been volunteering for about two years and I truly love it! Volunteering at the Y has allowed me to continue to share my love of math, my desire to serve and to experience the joy of helping students learn.

I would encourage everyone to share their talents with others. The Kerr Family YMCA is a home away from home for many people, young and old.  It is a great family to be a part of.  If you can give an hour or two a week volunteering, you may be able to fill a need the Kerr Y has or you may even be able to start a new program or service that the Kerr Y does not currently offer. That is what I did.  You will not regret it!
