Kindergarten is a big step for parents and kids. At the YMCA of the Triangle, we're committed to helping you and your family start on the right foot. Be sure to read our Parent Resource Center for helpful articles on easing the transition.
At the Y, your child will learn new skills, get much-needed playtime through a wide variety of activities and have fun with friends.
The Y provides before school and after school care for kindergartners. Our programs are located at the school, or just a short bus ride away. Tracking Out is our all-day program for year-round school students while they are on break.
We group children of the same age and grade together in “huddles.” So kindergartners are with kids their same age. Each huddle has one or two counselors to provide close supervision.
The Y handpicks each youth counselor. We look for a passion for working with kids, enthusiasm and the ability to be a positive role model. Y staff plan youth programs with safety and fun in mind. Counselors play with and supervise the kids through indoor and outdoor activities like gym games, playground time and creative arts.
The YMCA provides a 1:12 staff-to-child ratio, with a senior staff member always on-site and in charge. We pride ourselves on getting to know each child personally. We ask about allergies and special needs on the registration form, and we have that information available at the program site.
After School Transition
If the YMCA After School program is at your child’s school, a Y counselor will accompany your child from his or her classroom to the YMCA program area. If the after school program is not held at the school, your child may ride a YMCA bus to the program. YMCA staff take attendance as children check in and get on the bus, and our counselors ride the bus to the program with the children.
Summer Day Camp
We fill summer with full and half day camps that are active, fun and staffed by caring professional counselors. We group rising kindergartners together in our full-day summer camps in separate huddles with special age appropriate activities.
We also have a half-day day camp for rising kindergartners called Kindercamp that is held at locations around the Triangle.
Our day camps start in June and run through August at locations throughout the Triangle. A week of YMCA day camp is a great way to check out our quality programs.
Summer Day Camp registration starts January 1 for YMCA Members and open registration starts January 15.
