Kerr Family YMCA Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Jamie Andelman! Jamie is a volunteer at the Kerr Family YMCA who works as a belayer at our Climbing Wall. Jamie does a great job and we're grateful that he's part of our community. Let's get to know him a bit better...

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

I’ve lived in Raleigh for the past 15 years. Prior to that, I lived in Massachusetts, Illinois and New York. North Carolina has been a great place for my wife and me to raise our two daughters as well as several rescue dogs.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT THE Y?

I help people safely enjoy the climbing wall, which is technically referred to as a belayer. Many members don’t realize that the Kerr YMCA is the only Y branch in the triangle that has a rock wall. Climbing is a full body, non-impact blend of cardio and strength training that improves flexibility and strengthens under-utilized muscle groups. It is also a great equalizer. Kids and women can be just as good, if not better, climbers than adults and males.

While some may view the wall as a large, intimidating piece of equipment, I like to think of it as an adaptation of the environment. As such, it is more natural than most other fitness equipment in the building. If you’re interested in trying the wall, please stop by during Open Climb or talk to any of the friendly belayers – just not while they are focused on active climbers.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?

Helping people conquer fears, increase self-confidence and become healthier has been extremely rewarding. Similarly, the opportunity to connect with members, gain their trust and help them succeed continues to be fulfilling.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF BY VOLUNTEERING?

It never fails to put a smile on my face when someone wants to see if I will be volunteering the next time they plan on climbing or when they share a recent success. I try to react the same way when something I can improve upon comes up. Fortunately, most make it pretty easy, such as when a child says, “You’re so silly. How could you forget my name? You helped me climb two days ago!”

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MEMBERS THAT ARE CONSIDERING BECOMING VOLUNTEERS?

Think about helping with something that you either enjoy or are passionate about, even if it isn’t something the Y currently offers. In addition, don’t volunteer for more time than you can sustain. Consistent contribution from many volunteers, some of whom may only be able to dedicate a relatively modest number of hours per week or month, enables the Y to achieve its mission to build healthy sprit, mind and body for all. Without volunteers, it would be nearly impossible for YMCA branches to be successful.

If you are even considering becoming a volunteer, please have a conversation with Jennifer Gleason and see if both you and the Kerr Y could benefit. This is a first step, not a binding commitment, and Jennifer is a whiz at matching people with good-fit opportunities.

FINAL THOUGHT?

There are currently a few openings for part-time belayers (volunteer or paid) at the rock wall. Training will be provided, so no experience necessary. If you are interested, please contact Laura Kelley.
