Fit for Summer

Summertime is near and the Y is here to help you get and stay fit. Our healthy living directors share practical advice that will ensure you're fit for summer.

PLAN FOR 30 MINUTES A DAY

It's important to be active 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. Try a shorter time when you don't have 30 minutes. In general, 15 minutes of jogging has the same benefit as 30 minutes of walking.

As an alternative, you can count your daily activity steps using a FitBit (goal: 10,000 or more).

MIX IT UP

Mix vigorous activities with moderate ones. Try joining a fitness group or class. Don’t forget to do muscle-strengthening activities two days a week.

CLASSES TO TRY

TRX  is a total body resistance exercise that uses a suspension training system, making it possible for you to use your own body weight and gravity for an effective workout. It's a great way to work on strength, balance and mobility.

If you're looking to take your fitness to the next level, Interval Training is perhaps the most challenging class in the Cardio Fitness category. It's designed around segments of quick, high-intensity bursts of exercise with limited recovery time. Watch this video and feel the intensity.

And if you want a way to dance off the calories, try a YMCA Zumba class - watch the fun that happens at this class.

There's a class for everyone at the Y. Check out our fitness schedule.

STAY MOTIVATED

Get a little help from friends in a Small Group Training class or work with a personal trainer.

“Small group training allows you a chance to work out with other members who have similar goals, while also getting great instruction by a certified personal trainer for a safe and effective workout,” said Paula Ruff, A.E. Finley YMCA Healthy Living Director.

“You can look up workout plans online, or get them from friends, but it's not the same as having someone there who's educated about the human body and who plans your workout by taking your fitness level, balance, and strength into consideration," said Suzanne, a Kraft Y member. "I'm more invested in my workout because I know it's made specifically for me.”
