At the Y, we believe the ability to swim is a critical life skill for everyone. In swim lessons, we use a variety of fun methods to help kids overcome fears, build confidence in the water and develop skills that last a lifetime. Qualified instructors meet swimmers at their own level and celebrate all successes. By educating and partnering with swimmers, we’re determined to prevent drowning in our community. The Downtown Durham YMCA offers youth swim lessons for kids ages 6 to 12.
How it Works
All children are evaluated on the first day of class and placed in the class that best meets their current ability.
We offer two swim levels, Polliwog and Guppy.
Our Polliwog class is for beginning swimmers and focuses on breathing, floating, basic kicking, different strokes and building confidence in the water.
Our Guppy class is for children who can swim. It focuses on stroke refinement, kicking, rotary breathing, backstroke, diving and self-confidence.
Lifeguards are always on the pool deck during swim lessons.
Begins July 6 for fall lessons.
Weekday swim lessons meet from 5:40 - 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Weekend swim lessons meet from 10:30 - 11:20 a.m. on Saturday.
