BASKETBALL LEVEL YELLOW
Knowledge:
1. Learn the various types of fouls.
- Personal Foul: Called when illegal body contact occurs between opposing players. Common examples are holding, charging, tripping, blocking, pushing, or interference. A personal foul results in either a player taking free throws or a team losing possession of the ball.
- Charge: Called when a player moving with the ball runs into a defender who has established a set guarding stance. Possession of the ball goes to the defense.
- Blocking: Called when a defensive player who has not established a legal guarding stance impedes the movement of an offensive player.
- Technical Foul: Called against any player or coach for unsportsmanlike conduct such as swearing or arguing with a referee. A technical foul awards the other team at least one free throw and possession of the ball. If a player or coach receives two technical fouls, he or she is removed from the game.
- Defensive Foul: Called when the defensive player illegally contacts either the ball handler or an opposing player without the ball. Offensive team will either shoot free throws or retain possession of the ball out of bounds.
Character Development:
2. Give an example of a basketball player who is a good role model. Tell a small bit about the player, where they play, and why you like them.
Skills:
3. Make five out of five shots from the low block using the backboard. Player shoots from the center of the large squares located closest to the basket in the lane using the backboard. (Using age-appropriate goal height and ball.)
4. Demonstrate a chest and a bounce pass in motion between player and recipient. Both players will slide up the court sideways while passing the ball to one another using chest and bounce passes.
5. Demonstrate following your shot and proper rebounding. Following a shot, player should move into a rebounding position. Player should step in between the opposing player and the basket with his or her body in the direction of the basket. Lower your center of gravity by bending your knees. This will grant a solid stature. Now,stretch out your arms, and lean your back against the opponent.
6. Make five out of five proper lay-ups. Player must shoot with the proper hand using the backboard. Players may choose which hand they wish to perform the lay-ups with. (Using age-appropriate goal height and ball.)
7. Perform two out of three advanced stationary drills:
- 33 Zs: Player stands with hands at his or her sides. Another player holds a basketball at the base of the neck/top of the back and drops the ball randomly. Player must clap their hands in front of their body and reach back and catch the ball.
- Triangle: Have a basketball in each hand at chest level. Bounce one ball sideways to the opposite hand while passing the other ball to the opposite hand.
- Basic two-ball driblling (age appropriate ball): Player dribbles two basketballs simultaneously with both hands.
