BASKETBALL LEVEL ORANGE
Knowledge:
1. Learn the following rules:
- Double dribble: Using both hands at the same time to dribble the ball, or dribbling to a point then picking up the ball and dribbling again
- Traveling: Moving with the ball, but not dribbling at the same time.
- Point values: two points for a shot within the three-point line, three points for a shot behind the three-point line, and one point for a free throw
- Out of bounds: The ball crosses over the out-of-bounds line, and a player either was the last one to touch it or still has possession of the ball.
Character Development:
2. Learn the YMCA Mission Statement. To put Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Skills:
3. Demonstrate proper shooting techniques and explain BEEF.
- Balance: feet are shoulder-width apart (or slightly wider) with knees bent maintaining a good center of gravity
- Eyes: focused on the front of the rim (spot closest to shooter) with the mindset of aiming the ball over the top of the rim.
- Elbow: the elbow of the dominant hand taking the shot should be at a 90-degree angle out in front of their body.
- Follow Through: arms should be extended above the head in a forward position with the wrist in a broken position and fingers pointing down at the floor
4. Demonstrate the ability to dribble between cones while jogging. Player must not commit any violations (traveling, double dribble) or lose control of the ball.
5. Display the ability to throw a baseball pass, overhead pass and reach-around pass.
- Baseball pass: player throws the basketball just like a baseball to another player
- Overhead pass: player uses a two-handed over-the-head toss to another player
- Reach-around pass: player pivots his or her body away from the defender and throws a pass to a teammate behind the defender
6. Demonstrate the two basic stationary drills learned in red level. Player must demonstrate the drills without mistakes for 20 seconds each. (Using an age-appropriate ball.)
7. Make three out of five shots from the low block using the blackboard. Player shoots from the center of the large squares located closest to the basket in the lane using the backboard. (Using age-appropriate goal height and ball.)
