YMCA at The Factory-Volunteers-Volunteer Opportunities


Y-Learning and Tutorial programs
Volunteers age 16 and older

Franklinton, Heritage, Wildwood Forest and Fox Haven elementary schools

Volunteers will assist students with homework and study skills. Students in Y-Learning and Y tutorial programs are usually at risk of performing below grade level. Volunteers will be working one-on-one or in very small groups with students. Basic math and reading skills are needed. Volunteers may spend time in reading groups with children as well.

Volunteers are encouraged to commit to once a week for a minimum of one month.


Registration: Please fill out the volunteer application, and bring it to the YMCA at The Factory front desk.
When: Time may vary upon school, usually 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday

Elementary School Homework Helpers
Volunteers age 16 and older
Durant, Heritage, Jones Dairy, Kerr YMCA, North Forest Pines, Wakefield, Wilburn, and Wildwood Forest

Volunteers will assist elementary school students with their daily homework assignments. Basic math and reading skills are required.

Volunteers are encouraged to commit to once a week for a minimum of one month.

When: Time may vary upon school, usually 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday

Camp Lollipop Volunteer
Volunteers age 16 and older
Wake Forest Baptist Church

Volunteers will assist the camp counselors with implementing the planned theme activities of the day. We ask for a one-week or more commitment. Volunteers should have a love for very young children, patience and the ability to play, read books, sing funny songs and have fun.

Mystery Readers
Volunteers age 16 and older
Y-Playhouse, or YMCA preschool held at Camp Kanata

Volunteers are needed to read a story aloud to children once a month. The only skills you need are the love of children and the ability to read!

Kindercamp Volunteer
Volunteers age 16 and older
Banks D. Kerr Family YMCA

Volunteers will help camp counselors implement the themed activities for the week. They will also play, swim, read stories and have fun. Kindercampers are age 3 - 5.

We ask for a one-week, or more, commitment.

Swim Lessons
Parents or guardians of children in swim lessons

On the pool deck or in the pool at the Banks D. Kerr Family YMCA

Volunteers are a second pair of hands and a second set of eyes for the swim instructors. This allows YMCA instructors to allow swimmers more time in the water to practice swim skills. Volunteers should be patient with children and be confident in the water.

We ask for a commitment for the duration of your child's swim lesson session.

Membership Ambassadors - Membership Services
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory


Volunteers will be trained to greet members, swipe membership cards, hand out locker keys, and other assorted duties. Volunteers will not be responsible for nor handle any membership account information.

Volunteers should be mature, enthusiastic, work well in busy times and have a general knowledge of the YMCA at The Factory.

We ask for a two-hour per week commitment for a minimum of one month.

Membership Ambassadors - Door Greeters
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers will greet everyone that enters the YMCA at The Factory with a cheerful "Hello" or "Welcome to the Y." Volunteers will also be asked to hold doors and get to know members by name. Volunteers should be very cheerful and upbeat.

We ask for a two-hour per week commitment for a minimum of one month.

Membership Ambassadors - Tour Guide
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers will be trained to give informed, knowledgeable tours about the YMCA at The Factory and its programs and offerings to potential members. Volunteers should have great communication and listening skills, be knowledgeable about the YMCA and enjoy people and conversation.

We ask for a two-hour per week commitment for a minimum of one month.

Wellness Attendants/ Gym Monitors
Volunteers age 16 and older

YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers will help members become more comfortable with equipment and the wellness area. They will also assist people that need help while they exercise, they will help with wellness orientations and may also monitor pick-up basketball games to ensure games are Y appropriate and fair. Volunteers should have enthusiasm and the ability to mix and converse with members and staff.

We ask for a two-hour per week commitment for a minimum of one month.

Special Events
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers are needed to help plan, coordinate and serve at events such as Healthy Kids Day, Health Fairs, Race for the Cure and other family-style events throughout the year. Volunteers need to be able to work together as members of a team.

Volunteer hours and level of commitment will vary per event.

Facility Work Projects
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers will assist with branch facility maintenance by helping tackle projects that are time and labor intensive. Working as a team, volunteers help complete projects such as washing windows, putting up tents, planting flowers and trees, painting and other projects. Volunteers need to be able to lift more than 10 pounds and should be able to work on a team under the direction of the Banks D. Kerr YMCA director of operations.

Specific commitments can range from a few hours to a weekend, depending on the scope of the project.

Branch Safety and Beautification Committee
Volunteers age 16 and older
YMCA at The Factory

Volunteers will assist branch staff by helping to make the branch a safer place. Volunteers will also help plan and implement beautification projects that will enhance the grounds. Volunteers should have attention to detail and the ability to work on a team under the supervision of the Banks D. Kerr YMCA director of operations.

Volunteers are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings.
