Dr. Leo B. Marsh started the Black Achievers Program in 1971 in Harlem, New York. Today, the program includes all minority groups at YMCA's nationwide.

The YMCA of the Triangle Area Black Achievers has the following objectives:

  • Provide role models whose success and knowledge will inspire youth to set and reach their goals
  • Help youth develop a positive sense of self
  • Raise academic perfomance
  • Build character
  • Expose students to diverse career options
  • Recognize and promote excellence
  • Create channels for local businesses to be involved in the community

Subsidized by the We Build People Program, Black Achievers central purpose is to encourage minority youth to set and achieve high education and professional career goals.

Participants in this program meet bi-monthly in what is called "Clusters". Here, teens are connected with others students and adults throughout the Wake and Durham counties.

Black Achievers prepares youth for life beyond high school by providing exposure through adult mentors to various career fields including arts, entertainment, business, technology, medicine, education, engineering, law/goverment, vocational and technical careers.

Volunteer opportunities for service projects and group outings are also planned throughout the duration of the school year. A college spring break tour is additionally offered, which exposes high school students to various universities and higher education options.
