Volunteers

The Cary Family YMCA can always use more helping hands. We have opportunities to volunteer in Y programs, during one of our many annual activities, or for special events. Volunteering is a chance for everyone to give back to the community and a chance to grow and learn from others.

By becoming a Cary Family YMCA volunteer you are joining hundreds of families and individuals of all ages dedicated to helping build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. Volunteering for the YMCA is fun, rewarding and will give you a sense of community and belonging.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Membership: greeter, administrative assistant, member appreciation activities, Caring Network
  • Youth: sports coaches, referees and scorekeepers, afterschool tutors, camp, preschool, nursery and game room

  • Aquatics: greeter and swim instructor
  • Wellness: running mentor, maintenance, greeter, administrative assistant

How to Volunteer:

If you are 16 years of age or older complete a volunteer application and submit at the Welcome Center in the main building. Applications are available online (see below) or at the Welcome Center.

If you are between the ages of 14-15 you may volunteer with a parent during our Family Program events and third party staffed events. Every year, in March, anyone in this age group may apply to work as a summer camp assistant in one of our half-day camps. Interviews for these volunteer positions are held in April and May.

  Full Day Summer Camp (sports and general camps)Guide children in camp activities. Encourage and praise success. Support staff in setting up and cleaning up activities. Commit to minimum of 3 days per week.

  WeBuildPeople VolunteerAs a team member you will tell the Y story to members of the Y, our community and friends with the intention of raising donations to support the Y's Outreach programs. Volunteers may participate in annual campaign, golf marathon, or other activities throughout the year. Commitment varies throughout the year.
  Y-Learning TutorGuide children in completion of homework and skill building activities such as guided reading, math games and Study Island on the computer. Encourage and praise success. Commit to minimum of 2 afternoons per week. All programs held at local schools. Times vary by site but are all within this time frame.
  Outreach Support Children participating in the Y's outreach programs enjoy a variety of activities at the Y and are taken on outings such as ball games, theater performances, and overnight trips. Volunteers assist staff in the supervision and guidance of children during activities and on outings. Dates and times vary based on activities.
  Running Group Mentor Mentors are expected to encourage runners, especially any new or unsure runners and assist in leading the group in active stretches and warm up. Monitoring group dynamics and abilities during runs is also essential. Commit to at least one of our one hour running classes per week.
  Wellness Greeter & SupportGreet each member as they come on the Wellness floor. Connect and engage with members during their workouts. Learn the members’ names. Be able to assist with general information on Mobile Fit and wellness programs. Assist with light office work and keep coffee and magazine areas stocked and neat. Commit to at least one shift per week.
  Wellness Maintenance Help us keep our Wellness area clean and neat by assisting staff with cleaning the equipment and general work out areas. Included in this is the cleaning of mirrors, sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. If you enjoy being busy and are polite and friendly, we wan tot talk with you.
  Swim Instructor AssistantAssist and support the lead instructor as he/she directs swim techniques during each swim class. This includes directing, engaging and encouraging participants before, after and throughout the class. You must also be knowledgeable, able to explain and enforce aquatics safety guidelines.
  Aquatics Welcome Center GreeterGreeting and directing members and guests as they enter the facility are the main responsibilities of this position. Through training you will understand and be able to implement the guest policy and guest/day passes. You will also become familiar with and be able to explain information related to the Aquatics Center including the pool rules.
  Welcome Center GreeterThe Greeter enhances customer service by engaging members and guests as they enter and exit the facility. The greeter will provide direction, information and assistance as needed. For additional information please contact Iris Waters iris.waters@ymcatriangle.org
  Welcome Center AssistantComplete various tasks including the inventory of merchandise, photocopying, preparation of information packets and clothing items to support membership services functions.
  Member Appreciation Activities AssistantAssist YMCA staff in member appreciation activities. Encourage other members to participate in activities. Creative and artistic abilities are an asset. Organizational skills and the completion tasks in a timely manner are essential. Days and times vary throughout the year as per member appreciation events.
  Caring Network VolunteerThe Caring Network is a group of volunteer members who reach out to other members during a life challenge or transition such as a birth, death in the family, illness, military deployment, etc. Meet monthly with other volunteers to make and write cards to members. On occasion you may be asked to make phone calls or write to members from home.
  Youth Basketball Coach VolunteerThe Cary Family YMCA offers a youth basketball program to the community that emphasizes basic skills, character development, and fair play.

  YMCA Preschool VolunteersWe always enjoy the assistance of volunteers in our preschool classes and centers. Seeing the parents at school is a special treat for the kids!
