Programs-Youth -Summer Day Camp

Camp Rising Sun
Rising grades 1 - 8
Cary Family YMCA

Sun, Sun, Rising Sun. Like it, love it, Rising Sun....
Located on-site at the Cary Family YMCA, Camp Rising Sun offers jam-packed days of excitement. Campers are given opportunities to play, learn new skills, and make new friends. Enthusiastic counselors create an atmosphere of warmth and encouragement.
Keep reading to find out all about the fun activities we have planned at Camp Rising Sun.

After rides in activities, our official day begins with flag raising at Central Park. Camp directors run assemblies every morning with camp songs, skits, thought for the day, and many other surprises. During this opening assembly, a camper is chosen for the prestigious honor of "Hold the Wall". This special camper is put in charge of holding the wall (which is an integral part of the door) as the entire camp enters the building. The "Hold the Wall" assignment is considered a lifesaver! Huddles rotate adventures in Bond Park throughout the session. While at Bond Park campers fish, play field games, or go on a scavenger hunt. Huddles remaining at the YMCA enjoy ball games, team games, swimming, arts and crafts, devotions, and skill development.

Daily Schedule includes the following:

  • Skill Development and Challenge Days
  • Swimming everyday
  • Bead time and Necklaces
  • Devotions and Character Development
  • Assembly Time (Assemblies happen every morning, lunch, and afternoon. Assembly is typically lead by the camp director and includes awards, funny skits, thought for the day, songs, and general information for all campers and counselors.)
  • Activity Time 3-5 times a day (ball games, team games, arts and crafts, etc.)

Skill Development and Challenge Days!
HEATS (High Energy Activities Training) is an instructional time, four days a week, used to develop campers skills. The difference between this and other Rising Sun activities is that the focus is not 'playing' but learning. For example, during soccer HEAT the campers will not be playing a game but doing passing drills, discussing team strategy, and learning how to play soccer.
Camp Rising Sun vs. Camp Outer Limits 2008
Soccer (Session 1), June 27 at Camp Outer Limits
Basketball (Session 2), July 11 at Cary Family YMCA
Wrestling (Session 3), July 25 at Cary Family YMCA
Flag Football (Session 4), August 1 at Camp Outer Limits
Other possible HEATS include: jump rope, rock climbing, dance, archery, drama, reading, chess, and more.
Other HEATS may have performance days here at Camp during Family Days and assemblies.

Bead Time and Necklaces
One focus of the YMCA is character development. We integrate positive characteristics into day camp with our bead system. All the children will receive a bead necklace and be able to earn beads throughout the summer. The beads vary in color and meaning, and are a great encouragement and incentive to all campers. Make certain to ask your children what their beads mean, and how they earned them.
