Rising grades 9 - 10
Offered at Camp Rising Sun and Camp Outer Limits
Our CILTS program is designed to give campers an opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn more about the staff side of camp, as well as give them time to hang out with their peers in an active, fun, safe environment. The CILT program is the perfect balance of service, learning, and fun for campers rising grades 9 - 10.
What is a CILT? A CILT is a Camper In Leadership Training.
What does a CILT do all day? The key feature of the CILT program is hands-on training. The program includes working with younger campers through the guidance of a mentor counselor, leadership development, relationship building opportunities, daily structured training sessions, service oriented field trips, and fun field trips. In addition to leadership development and mentoring, CILTs will also have time to build relationships with other CILTs. Together the CILTs participate in fun activities like dodgeball, soccer, and swimming.
Who will be working with CILTS? Staff for our CILT program are college aged experienced counselors. These counselors are with the CILTS throughout the course of each day and on all field trips.
What kinds of leadership development do CILTS participate in? CILTS begin by attending a 2-3 hour training session prior to the start of camp in May. A separate parent orientation will be held during the last portion of this training session. Once CILTS are at camp they develop leadership skills by spending time working with a mentor counselor and younger campers, daily training sessions, open group discussion times, and service projects. CILTS receive training and evaluations from the CILT directors each session.
What kinds of service projects and field trips do CILTS go on? Possible service projects include: Adopt-A-Stream, visiting local retirement homes, working at the N.C. Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, running various events at camp such as carnivals, cookouts, etc. Possible fun field trips include: Putt-Putt, movies, ice skating, Jordan Lake, Emerald Pointe Water Park, surf fishing on the coast, etc.
Does being a CILT mean I will get a job as a staff member? No, being a CILT does not guarantee employment as a youth counselor. However, CILT evaluations do factor into the decision making process if the CILT decides to apply for a job as a youth counselor.
