Pool Use Guidelines - Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about using the pool? View answers to FAQ here.

What should I bring with me to the pool?
Remember to bring your membership ID card. Plastic pants are required of all patrons at risk of having a bathroom accident. You may bring flexible diving toys, fun noodles, masks, snorkels, and fins. Eating is permitted in the picnic areas - so you may bring snacks (see below what not to bring). Snacks are also available for purchase at the Cabana in the summer.

May I bring a guest to the pool?
Yes, you may bring a guest. Click here for specifics: Guest Policy

Where's the indoor pool?
The Cary Family YMCA has three pools. In the fall we enclose the main pool and the toddler pool in a "bubble". This allows our outdoor pool to be turned into a full season pool! Each spring and fall our main pool is closed for three weeks to remove/install the bubble and for a thorough cleaning. During these times our Oasis Pool is available for your use. It's a wonderful way for you and your family to enjoy swimming all year round.

What is not permitted in the pool area?
For safety reasons some objects are not permitted in the pool area: Glass/stoneware objects, pets, alcohol, water wings, inner tubes, and air mattresses. Please remember all our facilities are a smoke free environment.

So what’s the deal with the locker room?
Lockers with keys are available for use to members 9th grade and older. You may exchange your car keys for the locker key. Children younger than kindergarten may use the opposite sex locker room with adult supervision. Remember to shower before entering the pool.

What does the Y provide at the pool?
The YMCA provides a variety of objects to enhance your fun at the pool: Kick boards, fins, beach chairs in the toddler area, straightback chairs in the main pool area, instructional floatation devices, and changing cabanas.

Mom, how old do I have to be to play in the pool by myself?
Children (5th grade and younger) must be supervised by an adult at all times. Youth (6th to 8th grade) must complete middle school orientation before visiting the pool without an adult.

What is expected of me while I am in the water?
Swimmers should follow the aquatics staff’s instruction. Diving is permitted from the deep end wall (9 feet). Prolonged underwater swimming/breath holding is forbidden. Safe and courteous conduct is always expected.

Where do I get one of those cool swim bands I see everyone wearing?
Children (8th grade and younger) must be tested to earn a swim band. If a swimmer has not earned the band the child must wear a float belt and play in the designated area.

Can I go to the pool if I have a boo-boo?
Any person with open sores, blisters, or cuts should see a lifeguard before swimming. Remove and discard bandages prior to swimming.

Who can use the Toddler Pool?
The Toddler Pool is designed for children 1st grade and younger. Parental supervision is required at all times.

Who can use the Waterslide?
Use of the Waterslide requires the swimmer to have earned a swim band or be at least 48 inches tall.

What should I know about the Sprayground?
The Sprayground is designed for the family. Parental supervision is required at all times for children 2nd grade and younger (no lifeguard is in the Spraygound area).

When does the pool close for inclement weather?
The pools are closed for 30 minutes anytime lightning is seen or thunder is heard. The closing period begins again each time lightning or thunder occurs.
