Adams Elementary: 3:00-5:00 p.m. Briarcliff Elementary: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Carpenter Elementary: 3:45 - 5:30 p.m. Mills Park Elementary: 3:45 - 5:30 p.m. Reedy Creek Elementary: 3:45 - 5:30 p.m. Middle School: 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
An after-school tutorial outreach program serving students from Adams Elementary, Briarcliff Elementary, Carpenter Elementary, Green Hope Elementary, Mills Park Elementary, Reedy Creek Elementary, East Cary Middle and Reedy Creek Middle School. Students must be referred by a school guidance counselor or teacher. Thanks to the support of WeBuildPeople, this program is provided at no cost to qualifying participants.
The goal of the Y-Learning Program is to increase students' reading, writing and mathematics achievement through experiences that include a focus on social, emotional and character development. To support this goal, the program will focus on the following objectives:
- Improved homework completion, both quantity and quality
- Improved grades and academic achievement
- Increased interest and ability in reading
- Increased responsibility for own learning
- Increased motivation to learn
- Improved study skills and work habits
- Increased self confidence
- Higher school attendance
The Y-Learning Program will impact the developmental needs of children through a focus on:
- Providing a setting outside the family where they can express their individuality and master new skills
- Offering mixed-aged groups and activities that emphasize effort rather than competition
- Designing activities that match age and academic performance
- Expanding leadership activities by participating in one school service learning project each year.
Students will be identified for the program based on the following criteria:
- Elementary & middle school students
- EOG score at level II, with some level I students as determined by school and program staff
- Living in a clustered neighborhood for transportation
- Needing additional time and assistance to be successful
- Struggling to reach school system benchmarks
- Lacking educational setting, support or materials from home
- Family is financially unable to obtain tutoring services outside of Y-Learning
The Y-Learning Program has been designed as a school partnership, extending academic and social support to identified students. The after-school program will focus on the following areas to assist children with their learning:
- Silent Reading Time
- Structured Homework Time
- Computer Lab
- Skill Practice: Reading and Math
- End of Grade Preparation
- One School Service Learning Project
- One Special Event per semester
