A.E. Finley YMCA-Outreach -Outreach Programs

Y- Achievers
Teens in grades 8-12.
The Black Achievers program meets at the YMCA Corporate Office.
801 Corporate Center Drive Suite 200
Raleigh, NC 27607

Dr. Leo Marsh started the Black Achievers Program in 1971 in Harlem, NY. Today, the program includes all minority groups at YMCA's nationwide. The central purpose of the program is to help minority teens set and pursue higher education and career goals.

Education statistics show that African American and Hispanic students have higher high school and college drop out rates than their Caucasian counterparts. Research also shows that teens are more motivated to succeed academically when guided and encouraged by successful adults who look like them.

The YMCA of the Triangle pairs minority students with successful role models of color and provides academic and career-related mentoring and support services. The program connects teens in grades 8-12 with mentors in Wake and Durham counties. Activities are designed to give teens exposure to a variety of education and career options. These opportunities enable youth to make informed decisions and develop the skills necessary to be successful in life.

In addition to the cluster meetings, teens in the BA program participate in volunteer opportunities and group outings. There is an annual college tour during spring break. This tour exposes high school students to various universities and higher education opportunities.

We are pleased to award deserving seniors financial scholarships each year. The scholarships are announced at the Annual Gala, where participants have the opportunity to thank donors for their generous support and the volunteers for their dedicated commitment.

Program objectives include:[L]
Provide role models whose success and knowledge will inspire youth to set and reach their goals
Help youth develop a positive sense of self
Raise academic standards
Build character
Expose students to diverse career options
Recognize and promote excellence
Create channels for local businesses to be involved in the community[/L]
